LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Lakewood-based Christy Sports has hired new top executives who aim to make the ski rental retailer more profitable by building on the company’s expert employees and locations across the Rocky Mountains.

Pete LaBore, a former COO for online outdoor retailer Backcountry.com, joined Christy Sports over the summer and then helped hire new chiefs of marketing and merchandising for the 65-year-old business.

The company has struggled to handle the fall-off in business that’s roiling the outdoor industry as it comes off record interest and sales during the boom in outdoor recreation that accompanied Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns three years ago.

“The business maybe didn't adjust as much to that post-covid boom as maybe it needed to,” LaBore said. “That’s not unique to Christy Sports by any means — a lot of folks in the outdoor industry have had that issue — but I think ultimately the investors and owners sensed a change of leadership was probably needed.”

LaBore’s predecessor, Matt Gold, who had been CEO for six years, left the company in the spring and Christy Sports’ owners ended up finding LaBore to replace him.
