Latest election results for the Denver Public Schools Board

The current DPS board has been at the center of controversy around the district's policies on student violence.

DENVER — It appears voters are ready for new voices on the Denver Public Schools board. As of 9 p.m. on election night, three reformers are poised to win races, ousting two union-supported incumbents in the process.

Candidates were running for three open seats on the Denver Public Schools Board of Education. These include an At Large seat, the District 5 seat and the District 1 seat.

The latest results are below.

Former East High School principal John Youngquist ran against former Tattered Cover CEO and short-lived Denver mayoral candidate Kwame Spearman for an at-large seat.

The seat is being vacated by current board Vice President Auon'tai Anderson, who announced in June that he was not seeking re-election to the board. Instead, he said he plans to run to be state representative for Colorado House District 8.

Former DPS parent Marlene De La Rosa and current DPS parent Adam Slutzger are running against board incumbent Charmaine Lindsay for District 5.

Lifelong educator and DPS parent Kimberlee Sia is running against board incumbent Scott Balderman for District 1.

The current school board has faced community backlash over their handling of policies surrounding violent students, resulting in scrutiny of both the board and Superintendent Alex Marrero.

Sia, De La Rosa and Youngquist, a slate of "reformers," were endorsed by Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and charter school interests.

Denver's current school board consists entirely of union-backed candidates. Spearman is also a union-backed candidate.
